Somewhere deep inside of you is a wealth of talent, just waiting to be developed.
With a strong set of values, a few core beliefs about the world, skills to pay the bills, and the right people to surround yourself with… you could do work you love, day in and day out.
It’s not as easy as it sounds, of course. No, finding work that matters is quite difficult. It requires hard work and dedication.
It will mean working late nights and weekends on occasion.
It will mean research and self-reflection and emotional intelligence and leadership.
It will mean sacrificing in other areas of your life so that you can explore enough to find the work you can’t not do.
But once you find it, it’s a beautiful thing. It lights you up and makes you believe in yourself. Even better, it makes you believe in the world and the possibilities in that world.
And if you get very lucky, the work you can’t not do might just be the kind of work that also allows you to live a life of exploration, travel, and adventure.
The thing is, that adventure is just a side-effect of the work you can’t not do. It’s a nice benefit. The point… the thing that actually matters is the work itself. The impact it has on other people. The way it changes the world around you.
Find the work you can’t not do. The world deserves that from you. You deserve that from you.
Thanks to Scott Dinsmore for the inspiration for today’s post. Scott tragically passed away in an accident on Mt. Kilimanjaro in September 2015. He was a wonderful man, a loving husband, a mentor to me and so many others, and a huge goofball.
During his short time on this planet he impacted a remarkable number of people through his work at Live Your Legend. I can only hope that I’ll someday be able to reach a fraction of the people he did. Rest in peace, Scott. I’ll miss you and your voice.
