In America, we pride ourselves on freedom. Freedom of speech. Freedom of religion. Freedom to pursue happiness.
And yet, we like to avoid the discussion about the responsibility that accompanies freedom. And the equality. And the hard work. And the acts of generosity. And the sense of community.
Yes, enjoy your freedom. But not at the expense of someone else’s freedom.
Yes, speak your mind, but do it in a way that respects the views of others, even when they’re not equivalent to your own.
Yes, do what you want with your life. But have a sense of respect and responsibility to your community, to your country, to the people who also live here under the same values and hopes and dreams.
Yes, enjoy your life, but rather than lazily coast through life, find and do work that matters. That challenges you. That provides value back into the world.
By all means, exercise your freedom and rights. But please, remember that freedom comes with the responsibility to care.
