I regularly hear people call themselves “multi-potentialites” or “multi-passionate.” You know what that’s called? Being human.
Every person on earth is born with potential.
Research on the growth mindset shows us there is a simple difference between people who build new skills and explore new possibilities and those who don’t. The difference is a mindset shift from: I was born with a set amount of talent to I am capable of expanding my talents and skills with effort.
That’s it. The way you think about your potential is the thing that determines your potential.
Every person on earth also has many different passions.
I love cooking, hiking, basketball, baseball, entrepreneurship, marketing, science fiction, tv and movies, writing, reading, relationship building, travel and more. And that’s just the list I could come up with in 30 seconds.
These terms are usually used just before an excuse for why you refuse to choose a path forward for your career. But you are not unique in being a multi-passionate multi-potentialite. Every other person you see doing important, impactful work is equally full of potential and passion.
So don’t use your multi-passionate-multi-potential-ism as an excuse not to choose. Don’t use it as an excuse not to do good work. Don’t use it as an excuse for why you haven’t started. The fact that you can even think about your multi-passionate-potential is a privilege.
We’re all multi-passionate multi-potentialites. Now go do something that matters with that passionate potential. We need you.
