The Employee Happiness Ambassador

Today’s To-Do List:
– Call Sublime for donuts for Friday’s coffee hour
– Order cake for Fernando’s birthday
– Organize podcast listening party for Serial launch
– Order inflatable Turkey for Thanksgiving lunch
– Plan holiday party

All in a day’s work for Ashley Wilson, Mailchimp’s Employee Happiness Ambassador.

A long time ago in a galaxy [of work] far, far away, someone decided HR should be a cost center where policies, procedures and legalese are the rules of the governing bureacracy.

But some companies choose to do things differently. Having an employee happiness ambassador is one of a hundred ways Mailchimp is leading the way on how companies can/should/will approach “HR” in the future.

As Ashley Wilson puts it herself, “Happy chimps do better work, which makes for a better MailChimp—which helps customers … do better work, too.”

If you can find a better way to sum up what HR should be doing with their time everyday, let me know. In the mean time, if you run a company, you might take a hard look at the assumptions you make about the value your HR team creates.

Thanks to Mailchimp and Ashley Wilson for the inspiration for today’s post. Keep kicking ass.
